Routine allows us to suppress negative feelings and emotions and stops us from confronting things we need to learn or heal from.
For many years I lived a routine life. And it wasn’t necessarily that I was doing the same thing every day, but I was feeling and thinking the same thing 24/7. I was not learning, I was not growing. I didn’t know anything about myself.
Breaking cycles is a challenge but, through those challenging moments, we learn about ourselves. We learn to experience, to live, to feel.
Maybe you haven’t experienced anything traumatic and you don’t think you need to heal from anything. That’s OK. You can still benefit from being mindful and aware.
Here are 5 easy steps you can take towards mindfulness:
- Cultivate empathy
- Pay attention; observe
- Live intentionally
- Reflect before responding or acting
- Seek rhythm, not routine
“The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness. Mindfulness means being awake. It means knowing what you are doing.”
– Jon Kabat-Zinn
